How do I know if I need to replace my windows?

If your windows no longer open and close easily, are drafty, leaking, are not blocking out outside noise, or are more than 15 years old, you might want to think about having them replaced.

Will any window style fit in my home?

Choosing the window style that suits your home is essential, however, there are limitations on certain types of properties, such as listed buildings. Casement windows can be custom built to fit any size, while sash windows will fit into certain specifications, so it’s best to set up a consultation with a member of our team to help you make the right choice.

Do I need planning permission to have new windows installed?

Most homes in the UK are covered by permitted development, meaning it’s unlikely that you’ll need to secure planning permission to install new windows. There are a few exceptions, however, so if you’re in need of advice, give us a call and we’d be happy to help.

How long will my new windows last?

The average lifespan of windows is between 15 and 30 years. This all depends on the craftsmanship, the materials used, and the weather conditions where you live.

What is the difference between casement and flush sash windows?

The main difference between casement windows and flush sash windows is that while a regular casement is ‘lipped’, with the openable parts protruding from the frame, flush sash windows sit completely flush inside the frame when closed.

What’s the difference between bay and bow windows?

The biggest difference between the two is that a bay window will always have a base to it, whereas a bow typically doesn’t. Instead, bow windows usually have a timber constructed base with a gallows bracket.

Can I have tilt & turn windows in a listed property?

If you live in a listed property you may find that you cannot make changes that alter the exterior look and fabric of the building. As such you will not be able to upgrade the existing windows. It is important to check with your local authority to prevent any costly mistakes. Contact us today, and a member of our team will be happy to help with your planning and building regulation concerns.

    Are aluminium windows secure?

Aluminium windows are known for their strength and can provide enhanced security, especially when combined with multi-point locking systems.

How long do aluminium windows typically last?

With occasional maintenance (once or twice a year), aluminium windows can last 20-30 years or more.

    Are aluminium windows eco-friendly?

Yes! Aluminium is a recyclable material, so aluminium windows can be considered eco-friendly. Their thermal efficiency also means that less energy is expended on heating and cooling, lowering emissions.

    Are uPVC windows energy-efficient?

Yes, uPVC windows are highly energy-efficient. They have excellent insulation properties, helping to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing heating and cooling costs.

Can I customise the appearance of uPVC windows?

Yes, uPVC windows are available in a wide range of colours, styles, and finishes. You can choose the one that best matches your home's aesthetic.

Are uPVC windows more expensive than other window materials?

uPVC windows are often cost-effective when compared to other window materials like wood or aluminum. Their lower initial cost, combined with long-term energy savings and low maintenance, makes them a financially sound choice.

We offer entrance doors, composite doors, sliding patio doors, bi-fold doors, French doors and internal doors, all of which can come with a choice of glazing, side panels and are available in a range of colours, styles and accessories.

How much does installing a new front door cost?

The cost of installing a new front door will differ dependant on the type of door you want to install, the door style, material used if you need to replace the side panels, the size of the door, additional glass features, type of locking system, and the cost of adapting to the structure of your existing door and threshold.

What is the difference between composite and uPVC doors?

Composite doors are made up of a mixture of materials including solid timber, reinforced steel, uPVC and other elements, while uPVC doors are purely made from that one material. uPVC tends to be cheaper than composite, however, composite doors offer you a higher level of home security, thermal efficiency and durability.

Can my entrance door be made to measure?

Of course – many entrance doors are. Not all homes in the UK have same sized doors and doorways, so it’s common for homeowners to request a custom-sized front door. At Northwich Glass, we can tailor your entrance door to meet your exact requirements.

Are there building regulations that determine what entrance door sizes are allowed?

UK building regulations say that the main entranceway to a dwelling should have a clear width of at least 775mm, so as long as your door meets or exceeds this restriction, it can be any size.

Will sliding doors increase the value of my home?

Yes. If you're looking for a way to add value to your home, sliding patio doors are a great option to consider. Not only are they energy-efficient and low-maintenance, but they also improve your home's curb appeal and increase its resale value.

What is the life expectancy of a sliding glass door?

With consistent light cleaning, but without any major maintenance, sliding patio doors usually last for about 30 years.

    Are bi-fold doors secure?

As a major access point to your home, it’s natural to be concerned regarding security, but there’s no need to panic as all of our bi-fold doors are highly secure. The master door has a multi-point locking mechanism with hook bolts, while intermediate doors have bolts to top and bottom.

    Are French doors energy efficient?

Yes. Our French doors offer fantastic insulation and energy efficiency. Their low U-values mean you can retain heat in the colder months and in turn, reduce your energy bills whilst keeping cosy. In the summertime, our French doors will also enable you to keep your living space nice and cool.

What are the advantages of aluminium doors?

The advantage of aluminium – or steel look – doors is that they have a thinner frame, allowing for larger door sizes. The doors also have a thinner sash profile meaning larger glass sizes, and larger glass sizes mean more light and an overall better looking door.
