We’re incredibly proud to announce that at Northwich Glass, we have joined the Dementia Friends movement, an inspiring nationwide initiative led by Alzheimer’s Society.
Understanding the Challenge
Many people living with dementia often feel isolated and left out because dementia is still so misunderstood. This lack of understanding can make it harder for people with the condition to stay independent and feel connected to their communities.
This isolation doesn’t have to happen. Alzheimer’s Society recognised this challenge and created the Dementia Friends initiative to increase people’s understanding of dementia and inspire everyone to make a difference for people affected by the condition in their communities.
What Does It Mean to Be a Dementia Friend?
A Dementia Friend is someone who takes the time to learn about dementia and understands how small, everyday actions can make an enormous difference. The beauty of Alzheimer’s Society’s initiative lies in its simplicity, as becoming a Dementia Friend doesn’t require significant time commitments.
The programme teaches us that meaningful support can be as simple as:
- Showing patience and understanding in everyday interactions
- Taking time to listen without rushing
- Offering a friendly smile or a genuine greeting
- Being aware of how dementia might affect someone’s daily experiences
- Wearing a Dementia Friends badge to raise awareness
- Visiting someone you know who’s living with dementia or caring for a loved one
Our Journey to Becoming Dementia Friends
At Northwich Glass, we’re proud of our team, who have completed Dementia Friends training through sessions run by volunteer ambassadors or online learning. The experience has been genuinely transformative, giving us a deeper understanding of the realities faced by people living with dementia.
Since becoming Dementia Friends, we’ve witnessed firsthand how understanding and awareness can create meaningful change. The training has equipped our staff to recognise when someone might need additional support on an installation or project, and respond with patience and understanding. Small changes in communication have created a more inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
The Incredible Work of Alzheimer’s Society
Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends initiative represents something truly remarkable, a grassroots movement built on compassion and understanding.
The organisation has created a framework that makes it possible for anyone to contribute meaningfully to this cause. Whether through attending a face-to-face session, joining a virtual meeting, or watching their short online video, becoming a Dementia Friend is accessible to everyone.
Their volunteer Dementia Friends Ambassadors work tirelessly across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man, spreading awareness and building networks of support in communities everywhere.

Alzheimer’s Society has made joining incredibly straightforward. You can book onto sessions run by their dedicated volunteers or complete the training online at your own pace. The time investment is minimal, but the potential impact is immeasurable.
