What’s the difference between a composite and uPVC door?
This is a question that we receive on a regular basis, and it’s no surprise given the fact that these are the two most popular entrance door materials in the UK.
uPVC (Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride) is the most common door material in this country. It is a synthetic product that’s also used for window frames. Because it can be produced on mass, it’s often the cheapest door replacement on the market. That’s not to say that quality suffers, as uPVC still offers elite thermal performance and can even be finished in a range of convincing woodgrain effects.
Composite doors differ because they’re built using a combination of materials. The fastest-growing front door option in the UK, they typically include a foam or solid core, a GRP outer skin, and internal reinforcement. They feel premium, offer best-in-class security, are brilliant from a thermal performance standpoint, and are a long-lasting pick.

The core, regardless of whether you choose a solid or foam option, provides the structural strength, which is great for the harsh British weather. Whilst traditional wooden doors can rot, swell or fall victim to insect damage, composite doors won’t do this, and often last 40+ years.
uPVC doors
Resistant to rot and corrosion, and well suited to the British climate. Modern manufacturing processes have also reduced any tendency to discolour over time. They last for several decades, and whilst they typically aren’t as long-lasting as composite doors, you can expect a uPVC door to be a once-in-a-generation purchase.
